Saverio Ragno

Saverio Ragno (* 6. December 1902 in Trani , † 22. April 1969 in Sacile ) was an Italian sword - and foil - fencers . He won an Olympic gold medal in 1936 and was world champion seven times. He was the father of Antonella Ragno-Lonzi and thus the father-in-law of Gianni Lonzi .

Career

The first fencing world championship was held in 1937, the forerunner competition was the international championship. In 1930 Ragno won gold with the Italian foil team at the international championship , with the epee team he finished second behind the Belgian team. In 1931 , Ragno was part of the victorious Italian team in both branches of service. At the Olympic Games in 1932 , Ragno finished fourth in the individual epee rankings behind his compatriot Carlo Agostoni . The Italian team with Carlo Agostoni, Giancarlo Cornaggia Medici , Renzo Minoli , Saverio Ragno and Franco Riccardi won the silver medal behind the French team.

In 1933, Ragno won the international championship with both the foil team and the epee team . In the individual finals of the sword tournament he was defeated by the Frenchman Georges Buchard . In 1934 Ragno won silver with the epee team, in 1935 he received bronze in the epee singles. At the Olympic Games in 1936 Ragno reached the individual finals with the sword, Franco Riccardi won gold, Ragno received silver ahead of Giancarlo Cornaggia Medici. These three fencers together with Giancarlo Brusati , Edoardo Mangiarotti and Alfredo Pezzana also won the team competition.

At the first official World Fencing Championships in Paris in 1937 , Carlo Agostoni , Roberto Battaglia , Dario Mangiarotti , Edoardo Mangiarotti, Saverio Ragno and Mario Visconti won the gold medal with the foil in front of the French team. In 1938 in Piešťany the French team won the final against the Swedes, the Italian epee team won the bronze medal.

After the Second World War, the first World Cup took place in Lisbon in 1947 ; Ragno won two medals: silver with the foil team, bronze with the epee team. At the Olympic Games in 1948 Ragno only took part with the foil team. Together with Edoardo Mangiarotti, Giuliano Nostini , Renzo Nostini , Giorgio Pellini and Manlio Di Rosa , he won silver after a defeat against the French. Ragno won his last international medal at the age of 48 when he became world champion in foil at the fencing world championships in 1950, together with Manlio di Rosa, Edoardo Mangiarotti, Alessandro Mirandoli , Renzo Nostini and Giorgio Pellini.

Ragno won five Italian championship titles with the sword. His daughter Antonella Ragno-Lonzi was also a successful fencer; three years after Saverio Ragno's death, she became Olympic champion with the foil.
