Gianni Lonzi

Gianni Lonzi (born August 4, 1938 in Florence ) is a former Italian water polo player .

Gianni Lonzi played in the club for Rari Nantes Florence, Rari Nantes Camogli and Pro Recco , with Pro Recco he won the Italian championship in 1967 and 1968.

As a player, Lonzi took part in three Olympic water polo tournaments. In 1960 , the Italian team won the gold medal in front of a home crowd in Rome, Lonzi only played in one game in the preliminary round, but was then in all games. In 1964 and 1968 , the Italian team finished fourth. Lonzi reached a total of twenty appearances at the Olympic Games.

In the 1970s Lonzi was the coach of the Italian national team, he led the team to the Olympic silver medal in 1976 and in 1978 to win the title at the World Cup. In 1977 and 1982 he was involved as a coach in winning the European Junior Championship. Lonzi has been Vice-Chairman of the European Water Polo Committee since 1988, and since 1996 Chairman of the Technical Commission for Water Polo at FINA .

Lonzi is married to the fencing Olympic champion Antonella Ragno-Lonzi . In 2009 he was inducted into the hall of fame of international swimming .
