history

Founded in 1775 in Paris by Jean-François Houbigant from Grasse , gloves , perfumes and bridal arrangements were initially offered. The original shop was called " A la Corbeille de Fleurs " and was located on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré . Customers included Queen Marie-Antoinette of France.

He was succeeded in 1807 by his son Armand-Gustave Houbigant. In the same year he was appointed court perfumer for Napoleon and created a special fragrance for Empress Joséphine . In 1829, Houbigant was appointed perfumer to Princess Adélaïde d'Orléans. In 1838 the perfume house was named "Perfumer to Her Majesty, Queen Victoria of England". In 1880 the perfumer Paul Parquet became a partner. Ten years later, Tsar Alexander III was appointed perfumer at the court of the Tsars .

From 1912 to 1935 Robert Bienaimé worked for Houbigant and developed the Quelques Fleurs fragrance . The perfumers Paul Schving and Marcel Billot created new fragrances for Houbigant until 1950, the most famous being Chantilly from 1941. In the early 1980s Houbigant reintroduced Quelques Fleurs , followed by Duc de Vervins in 1985 and Quelques Fleurs Royale in 1998.

Houbigant is one of the oldest perfume houses and old Houbigant bottles are coveted collectibles. Houbigant was the first perfume house to use a synthetic fragrance, coumarin , in their Fougère Royale (1882) composed by Paul Parquet .
