István Kausz (born August 18, 1932 in Budapest ; † June 3, 2020 there ) was a Hungarian sword fencer .

István Kausz was in 1962 in Buenos Aires in the individual and in 1959 in Budapest with the team champion . In 1957 in Paris and 1958 in Philadelphia , he also finished second with the team and third in Gdansk in 1963 . He took part in the Olympic Games twice: in 1960 , when he finished fourth in Rome , he just missed a medal win with the team, while he was eliminated in the individual in the semi-finals. In the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo , he moved in with the Hungarian team into battle for the gold medal and was thanks to an 8: 3 success over Italy with Árpád Bárány , Tamás Gábor , Zoltán Nemere and Győző Kulcsár thus Olympic champion . In the individual, however, he did not get beyond the quarter-finals. In 1957 he won the Hungarian championships in singles, he was also six times Hungarian champion with the team.

In 1957 he finished his medical studies at Semmelweis University and later held several chief physician posts in Hungarian hospitals as a surgeon and sports doctor. In addition, from 1988 to 2008 he acted as the doctor in charge of the Hungarian delegation at six Olympic Games. Kausz, who was an honorary member of the Hungarian Olympic Committee , died on June 3, 2020 after a long illness.
