Paolo Pizzo (born April 4, 1983 in Catania ) is an Italian sword fencer . He is a two-time world champion.

successes

Paolo Pizzo started fencing at the age of seven. When he was 13 years old, he had a brain tumor removed. He fought for the Centro Sportivo dell'Aeronautica Militare .

He achieved his first international successes at the 2011 World Championships in his native Catania , when he won the title after beating Bas Verwijlen in the final 15:13 . He repeated this success in Leipzig in 2017 . In the final fight he prevailed against Nikolai Novosjolov with 15:13 . At European Championships he won three silver medals: in Strasbourg in 2014 and in Tbilisi in 2017 in singles and in Toruń in 2016 with the team. Pizzo was also twice part of the Italian delegation at the Olympic Games . In 2012 he was eliminated in the quarter-finals in London against the eventual Olympic champion Rubén Limardo with 12:15 and finished the tournament in fifth place. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he only reached 25th place. With the team, however, he was able to advance to the final after victories over Switzerland and Ukraine . There Italy lost to France with 31:45 , which meant winning the silver medal.
