As early as the 1950s, athletes and sports teams joined the Air Force under the acronym MDA Rome under the umbrella of the then partially independent Ministry of Aviation (Italian: M inistero D ell ' A eronautica, later M inistero della D ifesa - A eronautica) Competitions. Numerous athletes from CS Aeronautica have won medals at the Olympic Games . The following sports are practiced by athletes:

history

In 1964, the Italian state decided to professionalize sporting activities within the military and police and founded the center in the same year. The new sports center on a former sea airfield in Vigna di Valle on the shores of Lake Bracciano was made available to the athletes of the air force, which still operated under the name MDA Rome . A natural grass field for hockey with an athletics track was built on the old airfield . A basketball hall was created from the large hangar. The first major sports assigned by the Department of Defense included bobsleigh, field hockey, and roller skating.

In the 1980s, the sports center was further expanded and modernized. CS Aeronautica pursued two goals, on the one hand to further promote competitive athletes who completed their military service, and on the other hand to offer recreational sports to all Air Force personnel. Up until the turn of the millennium, the focus of competitive sports promotion was on fencing, athletics, basketball, sailing and horse riding. Since then, other sports have been added successively: 2001 volleyball, 2003 gymnastics, 2006 archery, 2007 table tennis, shooting and 2009 beach volleyball. With the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio 23 athletes of CS Aeronautica participated. Nowadays, recreational sport has taken a back seat in favor of competitive sport.

Between 1962 and 1971, the hockey team, which played in white jerseys with blue and red diagonal stripes and white shorts, won seven Italian championships under the name MDA Rome. In the ranking of most national field hockey titles, MDA is in third place behind record champion SG Amsicora from Cagliari with 22 championships and the nine-time champion HC Genoa. To date, MDA is the most successful Italian club on the international stage. In the four participations in the EuroHockey Club Champions Cup , the club reached the final twice. At the premiere of the competition in 1969 at the Wellington RTHC in Brussels, the team lost the final just under 0: 1 against the Spanish champions Club Egara . Two years later, MDA hosted the European Cup in Rome and was only defeated by German champions SC Frankfurt 1880 after a seven-meter shoot-out in front of 10,000 spectators at the Velodromo Olimpico . In 1971, the team received the Ministry of Defense Medal of Merit for national and international success. Nevertheless, the team was disbanded and divided between the clubs HC Napoli and Levante Assicurazioni. Most of the players were then Italian champions with Napoli in 1973 and 1974.
