At the 2005 World Championships in Leipzig , he surprisingly won the bronze medal in the men's singles. After defeating the Swiss Olympic champion Marcel Fischer in the quarter-finals , he had to admit defeat to eventual world champion Pawel Kolobkow in the semifinals by just 10:11 . After Hubert van Blijenburgh in 1906, Verwijlen is only the second Dutchman to win a medal at world fencing championships.
At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 , Verwijlen took eighth place in the epee singles. In 2011 he won silver in the individual both at the European Championships in Sheffield behind Jörg Fiedler and at the World Championships in Catania behind Paolo Pizzo . In 2012 he took part again in the Olympic Games in London and finished thirteenth in the individual.
