József Sákovics

József Sákovics (* 26. July 1927 in Budapest , † 2 January 2009 ) was a Hungarian fencer , of the foil -Equipe two Olympic bronze medals and with the sword won an Olympic silver medal -Equipe.

Career

At the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, the Hungarian team with Tibor Berczelly , Aladár Gerevich , Lajos Maszlay , Endre Palócz , József Sákovics and Endre Tilli won the bronze medal behind the French and Italians. In the epee singles and with the epee team, Sákovics took fifth place. At the fencing world championships in 1953 , Sákovics won bronze with the foil team behind France and Italy. In the epee singles he won the gold medal in front of his compatriot Barnabás Berzsenyi . In 1955 in Rome , the Hungarian sword team won the bronze medal behind the Italians and French.

At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , the Hungarian foil team with Mihály Fülöp , József Gyuricza , József Marosi , József Sákovics, Lajos Somodi and Endre Tilli received the bronze medal behind the Italians and French. In the epee singles, Sákovics retired early, the team with Lajos Balthazár , Barnabás Berzsenyi, József Marosi, Ambrus Nagy , Béla Rerrich and József Sákovics won the silver medal behind the Italians. After the Olympic Games, Sákovics sat down with his wife Lídia Dömölky-Sákovics in the United States from the Hungarian team, but both returned to Hungary and the national fencing team in 1957. At the Fencing World Championships in Budapest in 1959 , she won the world championship title with the foil team and he with the sword team, with Árpád Bárány , Tamás Gábor and István Kausz, in addition to Sákovics .

At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, Sákovics took fourth place three times. The foil team lost the battle for bronze against the German team. The epee team was defeated by the Soviet fencers and in the epee singles the Soviet fencer Bruno Habārovs won the jump-off . At the fencing world championships in 1962 Sákovics won the silver medal behind the Soviet team with the foil team, it was his last international medal.

He was married to Lídia Dömölky-Sákovics .
