Bernard Tchoullouyan (born April 12, 1953 in Marseille ; † January 7, 2019 ) was a French judoka . He won an Olympic bronze medal in 1980 and was world champion in 1981.

Athletic career

The 1.78 m tall Tchoullouyan started until 1976 in the middleweight up to 80 kilograms. After the reform of the weight classes he fought from 1977 to 1980 in the light middleweight up to 78 kilograms, then in the middleweight up to 86 kg.

At the European Championships in 1977 he won a bronze medal behind the Polish European champions Adam Adamczyk and Harald Heinke from the GDR. In 1978 he lost to Harald Heinke in the semifinals of the European Championships and again received a bronze medal. In 1979 he reached the final of the World Championships by a semi-final victory over Heinke, the final won by the Japanese Shozo Fujii . At the European Championships in 1980 Tchoullouyan won bronze. In Moscow at the Olympic Games, the French lost to the Cuban Juan Ferrer in the semifinals . In the battle for bronze he defeated the Spaniard Ignacio Sanz .

In 1981 Tchoullouyan won his new weight class at the Tournoi de Paris and the French championships. At the European Championships he reached the final, but was defeated by David Bodaveli, who was competing for the Soviet Union . Three and a half months later he won the first round of the World Championships in Maastricht against Bodaveli and then against the Austrian Peter Seisenbacher . After victories over the Dutchman Bert Verhoeven and the Spaniard Alfonso García , he defeated the Japanese Seiki Nose in the final and was world champion. At the European Championships in 1982 Tchoullouyan won again bronze after a semi-final defeat against the Italian Mario Vecchi . After winning the European Team Championships in 1982, Bernard Tchoullouyan's international career ended.
