Hiroshi Izumi

Hiroshi Izumi ( Japanese 泉 浩 , Izumi Hirsohi ; born June 22, 1982 in Ōma , Aomori Prefecture ) is a Japanese judoka . He was runner-up in 2004 and world champion 2005 in middleweight, the weight class up to 90 kilograms.

Athletic career

The 1.73 m tall Hiroshi Izumi won the silver medal at the World Student Championships in 2002. The following year he won the Universiade in Jeju. In 2004 he won a bronze medal at the Asian Championships in Almaty. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , he defeated Belarusian Sergei Kucharenko in the first round after ten seconds. In the second round against the Greek Dionysios Iliadis he needed 1:24 minutes, the quarter-finals against the Argentine Eduardo Costa won Izumi with a Koka rating. The semi-final against South Korean Hwang Hui-tae also lasted five minutes, Izumi won through Waza-ari. In the final he was defeated by the Georgian Zurab Swiadauri after 3:03 minutes.

At the 2005 World Championships in Cairo , he defeated Hwang Hui-tae in the round of 16. With victories over the Italian Roberto Meloni in the quarter-finals and over the Dutchman Mark Huizinga in the semi-finals, he reached the final against the Greek Ilias Iliadis , which Izumi also won. The following year, Izumi won a bronze medal at the 2006 Asian Games after losing to Kazakhs Maxim Rakov at the start . In 2008 he won the Asian Championships in Jeju. At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 he won his opening match against the Australian Daniel Kelly by golden score. In the round of 16 he was eliminated after 1:36 minutes against the Belarusian Andrej Kasussjonak .

Hiroshi Izumi then tried his hand at mixed martial arts and later tried to make a comeback in judo, both without great success.
