Masashi Nishiyama

Masashi Nishiyama ( Japanese 西山 将士 , Nishiyama Masashi ; born July 9, 1985 in Shimonoseki ) is a former Japanese judoka . He was Olympic third in 2012 in the middleweight division, up to 90 kilograms.

Athletic career

The 1.78 m tall Masashi Nishiyama won the 2009 All-Japanese Championships. In May 2009 he defeated the South Korean Kwon Yong-woo in the semi-finals of the Asian Championships in Taipei and the Uzbek Dilshod Choriyev in the final . At the end of the year he won the title at the Southeast Asian Championships. In 2010 he was team world champion with the Japanese men's team. In 2010 and 2011 he won the Grand Slam tournament in Tokyo.

At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London he won his opening match against the Kyrgyz Chingis Mamedow and the round of 16 against the Kazak Timur Bolat after fighting for the full duration of five minutes, in the quarterfinals he was also defeated by the South Korean Song Dae-nam after five minutes. Masashi Nishiyama won his round of hope fights against the Uzbek Dilshod Choriyev and the Russian Kirill Denisov with a golden score in overtime . Nishiyama and the Japanese team took second place behind the Russians at the 2012 World Team Championships, and in 2013 the Japanese won the bronze medal.

Masashi Nishiyama ended his active career in early 2016.
