Gwak Dong-han (born April 20, 1992 in Pohang ) is a South Korean judoka . He was Olympic third in 2016 and world champion in 2015 in middleweight, the weight class up to 90 kilograms.

Athletic career

The 1.83 m tall Gwak Dong-han reached the final at the Asian Championships in 2013 and received the silver medal after his final defeat against the Japanese Shohei Shimowada . In the same year he won the Universiade in Kazan. At the end of 2013 he won the Grand Prix tournament in Jeju for the first time, followed by further victories in this tournament in 2014 and 2015. Gwak won a bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon. At the end of 2014 he won the Grand Slam tournament in Tokyo, and at the beginning of 2015 the European Open in Warsaw. In April 2015 he defeated the Japanese Daiki Nishiyama in the final of the Asian Championships in Kuwait . At the beginning of July he defeated the Russian Khussein Chalmursajew in the finals of the Universiade in Gwangju . At the 2015 World Championships in Astana , Gwak defeated the Georgian Warlam Liparteliani in the quarter-finals and the Tajik Komronshokh Ustopiriyon in the semifinals . In the final he won over the Russian Kirill Denisov .

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Gwak defeated Chilean Thomas Briceño after 1:46 minutes in his first fight . In the last sixteen he beat Popole Misenga from the Refugee Olympic Team after 4:01 minutes. Against Mammadali Mehdiyev from Azerbaijan the fight ended after 4:34 minutes. The semifinals also ended prematurely, after 2:15 minutes Warlam Liparteliani had ended the fight through Ippon after a uchi-mata. Gwak won the battle for bronze against the Swede Marcus Nyman after 2:31 minutes.

In May 2017, Gwak Dong-han finished fifth at the Asian Championships. Gwak won his third university title at the Universiade in Taipei in August 2017. Ten days later he lost to the Slovenian Mikael Özerler in the quarterfinals of the World Championships in Budapest . With victories over the Mongols Altanbagana Gantulga and the Hungarians Krisztián Tóth , Gwak won a bronze medal. At the 2018 Asian Games , Gwak defeated the Japanese Mashu Baker in the semifinals , and in the final he defeated the Mongols Altanbagana Gantulga. At the World Championships in Baku , he retired early against the French Axel Clerget .
