Shinobu Sekine ( Japanese 関 根 忍 , Sekine Shinobu ; born September 20, 1943 in Ōarai , Ibaraki Prefecture ; † December 18, 2018 ) was a Japanese judoka . He became the second middleweight judo Olympic champion in 1972.

Career

Sekine won the middleweight division at the Asian Championships in Manila in 1966 and won a bronze medal in the open class. At the 1971 World Championships in Ludwigshafen , Sekine competed in the open class. He won his first four fights, but then lost to Vitaly Kuznetsov from the Soviet Union and Klaus Glahn from the Federal Republic of Germany. By defeating Giwi Onashvili from the Soviet Union, Sekine won a bronze medal.

In 1972 Sekine won the Japanese championships in the open class. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , he defeated the Portuguese Orlando Ferreira after 48 seconds in his first fight . In the second round he defeated the Hungarian László Ipacs after 4:46 minutes. The fight against New Zealander Rick Littlewood went over the full distance, the winner was determined by the referee. In the pool final, Sekine was also defeated by the South Korean Oh Seung-lip by a referee decision. With a victory in the hope round against the Austrian Lutz Lischka after 2:32 minutes of fighting time, Sekine qualified for the final round. There he defeated the Briton Brian Jacks with a referee decision and met again on Oh Seung-lip in the final. If all previously listed referee decisions were unanimous with 3: 0 votes, the final was decided with 2: 1 votes for Shinobu Sekine.
