Isamu Sonoda

Isamu Sonoda ( Japanese 園田 勇 , Sonoda, Isamu ; born November 4, 1946 in Yanagawa ) is a former Japanese judoka . He was the third middleweight judo Olympic champion.

The 1.77 m tall Sonoda won the 1967 Universiade in Tokyo. At the 1969 World Championships in Mexico City , he defeated the Dutchman Martin Poglajen in the fight for the final and defeated his compatriot Katsuya Hirao in the final . Four years later he reached the final again at the 1973 World Championships in Lausanne , this time he was defeated by his compatriot Shozo Fujii .

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , Sonoda won his first fight against the Australian Paul Buganey through Ippon. He had to go the full distance against the North Korean Jong In-chol in the round of 16 and against the South Korean Park Young-chul in the quarter-finals. Sonoda won the pool final against Fred Marhenke from the Federal Republic of Germany after 3:23 minutes. In the final, Sonoda met Valeri Dwoinikow from the Soviet Union, the Japanese won with a Yuko rating. In 1978, at the end of his career, Sonoda won the Jigoro Kano Cup in Tokyo.
