Nikoloz Sherazadishvili

Nikoloz Sherazadishvili (born February 19, 1996 in Tbilisi , Georgia ) is a Spanish judoka . He was the first male Spanish judo world champion in 2018.

Athletic career

Nikoloz Sherazadishvili grew up in Georgia and came to Spain in the early 2010s. From 2011 he took part in Spanish cadet championships. Since 2014 he started in the middleweight division, the weight class up to 90 kilograms. In 2014, he won bronze in this weight class at the European Junior Championships and silver at the U21 World Championships. 2015 was followed by silver again at the U21 World Championships and in 2016 also silver at the European Junior Championships. In 2017 he won his second Spanish championship title after 2015. At the end of 2017, he won his first Grand Slam tournament in Abu Dhabi.

At the European Championships in Tel Aviv in 2018, Sherazadishvili lost to the Russian Mikhail Igolnikov in the semifinals , and with a victory over the Belarusian Yahor Varapayeu he secured a bronze medal. Two months later, Sherazadishvili won the final of the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona over the Serb Nemanja Majdov .

By 2018, two Spanish women had become world champions: Miriam Blasco in 1991 and Isabel Fernández in 1997 . At the 2018 World Championships in Baku , Nikoloz Sherazadishvili defeated European champion Igolnikov in his second fight. This was followed by victories over the Slovenian Mikael Özerler , the Cuban Asley González and the Hungarian Krisztián Tóth . In the final, Sherazadishvili defeated the Cuban Iván Felipe Silva and won the third world title for Spain, the first among men.
