Daiki Nishiyama

Daiki Nishiyama ( Japanese 西山 大 希 Nishiyama Daiki ; born November 20, 1990 ) is a Japanese judoka . He was second in the middleweight championship in 2010 and 2011.

Athletic career

Daiki Nishiyama was third in the 2009 Junior World Championships. At the Grand Slam tournament in Tokyo , he reached the final at the end of 2009 and lost to Takashi Ono . In 2010 Ono also won the Japanese championships before Nishiyama. In May Nishiyama finished third at the Grand Slam in Rio de Janeiro , in July he reached the final at the Grand Slam in Moscow , where he lost again to Ono. At the World Championships in Tokyo he defeated the Austrian Max Schirnhofer in the quarterfinals and the Georgian Warlam Liparteliani in the semifinals , in the final Nishiyama was defeated by the Greek Ilias Iliadis . In early 2011, Nishiyama won the final of the Grand Slam tournament in Paris against the Brazilian Tiago Camilo . In the final of the Asian Championships in Abu Dhabi he lost to the South Korean Lee Kyu-won . At the Grand Slam in Moscow, Nishiyama reached the final as in 2010 and then lost to Ilias Iliadis. At the World Championships in Paris he defeated the Cuban Asley González in the quarter-finals and Takashi Ono in the semifinals, in the final he lost again to Iliadis.

In the next few years Nishiyama could not qualify for international championships. His best international placement was the second place behind the South Korean Gwak Dong-han at the Grand Slam in Tokyo 2014. In 2015 these two judoka met in the final of the Asian Championships in Kuwait and Gwak won here too. At the beginning of 2016 Nishiyama won the Grand Slam in Paris, where he defeated the French Alexandre Iddir in the final . In 2017 he switched to light heavyweight, in 2018 he became Japanese champion in this weight class.
