Warlam Liparteliani

Warlam Liparteliani (born February 27, 1989 in Mtskheta , Niederkartlien ) is a Georgian judoka . Until 2016 he competed in middleweight (up to 90 kg) and since then in light heavyweight (up to 100 kg). In 2012, 2014 and 2016 he was European champion.

Career

Liparteliani won the European Junior Championships in 2007, and in the adult class he won the first of three Georgian championship titles so far (2007, 2012, 2013). In 2008 he won his first world cup tournament in Vienna. In the same year he won the Junior European Championships and the Junior World Championships. With the Georgian team he won the title at the World Team Championship. In 2009 he reached the final at the European Championships in Tbilisi , after his defeat against the Belarusian Andrej Kasussjonak he received the silver medal. The following year he was defeated in the final at the 2010 European Championships in Vienna against the Swede Marcus Nyman , with the Georgian team he won the team competition. At the 2010 World Championships , he finished fifth. In 2011 he received the bronze medal at the European Championships in Istanbul, both individually and with the team. In 2012 at the European Championships in Chelyabinsk , he won both titles. Three months later he lost in the second round of the Olympic Games in London against the Australian Mark Anthony and was eliminated.

At the European Championships in Budapest in 2013 , Liparteliani reached the final in the individual competition, but was defeated there against the Russian Kirill Denisov , the Georgians won the team competition in the final against the Russians. In the same year Liparteliani reached the final at the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro , where he was defeated by the Cuban Asley González . In the team competition, the Georgians also won against the Russians in the final in Rio de Janeiro. At the European Championships in Montpellier in 2014 , Liparteliani again won two gold medals, and at the World Championships in Chelyabinsk it was two bronze medals. The 2015 European Championships were held as part of the European Games in Baku , Liparteliani lost to Kirill Denisov in the final of the individual competition and the Russians also beat the Georgians in the team final. At the 2015 World Championships , Liparteliani again received two bronze medals. In 2016 he won the European Championships in Kazan in the final against the Hungarian Krisztián Tóth , the Georgian team won ahead of the Russian hosts. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Liparteliani won his first four fights and then lost the final against the Japanese Mashu Baker .

After eight individual medals in a row at European Championships, Liparteliani only finished seventh in his new weight class at the 2017 European Championships . Four months later he reached the final at the World Championships in Budapest and received the silver medal after his defeat by the Japanese Aaron Wolf . A year later, Liparteliani also fought his way to the final at the 2018 World Championships in Baku , where he was defeated by the South Korean Cho Gu-ham . Liparteliani also won silver in 2019 at the European Championships, which were held as part of the European Games in Minsk. In the final he was defeated by the Russian Arman Adamian .
