action
In Malawi, Africa, there was a threat of famine at the turn of the millennium when a flood was followed by a long period of drought . The father of 13-year-old William Kamkwamba can no longer afford the school fees for his son. Some neighbors had sold the last of the forest areas to large plantation operators for deforestation in order not to starve to death. Others rob the Kamkwambas of their last harvest. In order to be able to operate agriculture during the dry season , irrigation is required . William finds a still working pump and an old car battery in the garbage dump. He uses his knowledge of his sister's secret love affair with his teacher to be able to continue using the school library despite being expelled from school. In a book he finds a description of how one can recharge the car battery using a wind turbine and a bicycle dynamo . But for that he needs the teacher's dynamo and his father's bike . When his sister leaves the village with the teacher, William receives his dynamo. His father, however, does not give up the bike even under threat from Williams friends. Only when his wife speaks to his conscience does he give in. The wind turbine works and saves the village from famine. William will later study and use his knowledge to build more wind turbines.
