Juan Ferrer

Juan Ferrer Lahera (born August 24, 1955 in Santiago de Cuba , † October 22, 2015 in Havana ) was a Cuban judoka . He won an Olympic silver medal in 1980.

The 1.80 m tall Ferrer fought in the light middleweight division. In this weight class he won six Cuban championship titles from 1976 to 1984. In 1974 he won the silver medal at the Pan American Championships behind the Canadian Wayne Erdman . In 1979 he reached third place at the Pan American Games .

At the 1980 Olympic Tournament in Moscow , he had to go full time in his first two fights against the Irish David McManus and the Yugoslav Slavko Sikirić . In the quarter-finals against the Spaniard Ignacio Sanz he won after 1:09 minutes, in the semifinals against the French Bernard Tchoullouyan he needed 28 seconds. In the final he was defeated by Schota Chabareli from the Soviet Union after the full fighting time with a Yuko rating.

In 1983 Ferrer reached the final of the Pan American Games and then lost to Brett Barron from the United States. In 1984 Ferrer won the Pan American Championships.

After his active career, the trained sports teacher worked, among other things, as a judo trainer and also looked after the Cuban national team. He died of cancer at the age of 60.
