Guyana took part in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow with a delegation of eight athletes (seven men and one woman) in ten competitions in three sports. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the athlete James Gilkes .
At these games, Guyana's first and so far only medal success was achieved at the Olympic Games: boxer Michael Anthony reached the semi-finals in the bantamweight competition and won bronze. This made the nation 35th in the medal table.
