Italy took part in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow with a delegation of 158 athletes (120 men and 38 women) in 88 competitions in 19 sports.

The Italian athletes won eight gold, three silver and four bronze medals. Olympic champions were the athletes Pietro Mennea over 200 meters, Maurizio Damilano in the 20 km walk and Sara Simeoni in the high jump, the boxer Patrizio Oliva in the light welterweight, the rider Federico Roman in eventing, the judoka Ezio Gamba in the lightweight, the marksman Luciano Giovannetti in the Trap and the paper weight freestyle wrestler Claudio Pollio .
