Italy took part in the 1948 Summer Olympics in London with a delegation of 215 athletes (195 men and 20 women) in 89 competitions in 16 competitions.

The Italian athletes won eight gold, eleven silver and eight bronze medals. This put Italy in fifth place in the medal table . The medal wins in the art competitions , which are not included in the official medal table for the games, are not taken into account . The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the athlete Gianni Rocca .
