India took part in the 1948 Summer Olympics in London with a delegation of 77 male athletes in 38 competitions in nine sports. There were also the painters AG Chagale and KS Kulkarni , who took part in the art competitions. The only medal success was achieved by the hockey team, which won the tournament. It was India's first participation in the Summer Olympics as an independent nation.
