Italy took part in the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan with a delegation of 44 athletes, 41 men and three women.

It was Italy's eleventh participation in the Winter Olympic Games since 1924 .

Flag bearer

The bobsleigh driver Klaus-Luciano De Paolis carried the flag of Italy during the opening ceremony in the Makomanai Stadium .

Medals

With two won gold, two silver and a bronze medal, the Italian team was ranked 8th in the medals table .
