Helmuth Schmalzl (born October 8, 1948 in Ortisei in Val Gardena ) is a former Italian ski racer . The South Tyrolean was one of the world's best giant slalom riders in the first half of the 1970s . After his resignation, he worked for more than a decade as the coach of the Italian national ski team, and from 1998 to 2014 he was the World Cup race director of the FIS .
biography
Schmalzl won the first World Cup points as tenth on the downhill in Val Gardena on February 14, 1969 . However, three years passed before the next success report. In the meantime, Schmalzl had specialized in the giant slalom and slalom disciplines. At the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo , he finished sixth in slalom. Just a week later he achieved the first podium finish as third in the giant slalom in Banff .
In the following season 1972/73 two more third places in the giant slalom of the criterion of the first snow in Val-d'Isère and the 3-Tre race in Madonna di Campiglio as well as several placements among the top ten were added. Schmalzl finished sixth in the giant slalom discipline. The 1973/74 season was similarly successful . On December 8, 1973, he finished second in the giant slalom in Val-d'Isère and achieved the best result of his career. In the discipline ranking he was finally fourth. He was also fourth in the giant slalom at the 1974 World Cup in St. Moritz .
In March 1975, Schmalzl resigned from top-class sport. He then worked as director of the Piancavallo winter sports station near Aviano . In 1988 he took over the position of head coach of the Italian national ski team. After gaining experience as head of security on the Saslong World Cup slope , Schmalzl was appointed technical delegate by the FIS in 1998 . In this role he was mainly responsible for preparing and setting courses for downhill races in the World Cup as well as at the Olympic Games and World Championships. In 2014 Hannes Trinkl took over this task.
