Erwin Stricker (born August 15, 1950 in Mattighofen , Upper Austria ; † September 28, 2010 in Bozen , South Tyrol ) was an Italian ski racer and entrepreneur of South Tyrolean origin.
biography
Stricker was born in Mattighofen, his parents from South Tyrol returned to South Tyrol in 1955 and settled first in Gossensaß and then in Vahrn . In 1969 he was accepted into the then very successful national team (see also Gustav Thöni ). He took part in races in all disciplines, was an Olympic participant in 1972 and 1976 and was Italian champion in the downhill in 1976 and in the combination in 1977. In the Ski World Cup he achieved two podium places and 15 other placements among the top ten. He won a giant slalom on the Stilfserjoch (June 24/25, 1972) held over two days, ahead of Thomas Hauser .
In 1979 he ended his sporting career and became a winter sports consultant and entrepreneur.
Even during his active time and afterwards, Stricker contributed to the development of alpine skiing through technical innovations. Among other things, he developed curved ski poles and an aerodynamic helmet for the descent, Vulture's beak ski tips, knee pads and a ski suit. In memory of his numerous accidents, he also pushed the use of helmets in slalom. In 1979 he had the first snow cannon in South Tyrol set up. His ski rental Rent and go is represented by franchisees around 600 times in 450 ski areas around the world. Stricker set up a bike rental shop along the Vinschgau Railway. Most recently he was involved in the construction of the Chinese ski resort Saibei Dolomiti in the Chongli district near Zhangjiakou and initiated the Prowinter and Alpitec trade fairs at the Bolzano exhibition center ( the exhibition is also held in Beijing under the name Alpitec China ).
He married Linda Esser from the Netherlands in 1978 and had two children with her. Stricker, who last lived in Merano , was diagnosed with cancer years ago and died on September 28, 2010 in the Bolzano hospital as a result of a brain tumor.
