Italy took part in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki with a delegation of 231 athletes (208 men and 23 women) in 114 competitions in 19 sports. The nation was most successful in fencing, with eight medal wins. Edoardo Mangiarotti won a total of four medals, Irene Camber won gold in foil and at the time was the only woman in her country to win a medal. Many medals could also be won in cycling. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the gymnast Miranda Cicognani .
