Gianni Ghidini

Gianni Ghidini (born May 21, 1930 in Golese , Parma , † June 20, 1995 in Baganezola , Parma) was an Italian cyclist. As an amateur athlete , he became world champion in the individual road race and won an Olympic silver medal.

Athletic career

Ghidini was mainly active in road cycling and celebrated his greatest success as an amateur rider . As a 19-year-old he won the Coppa Collecchio, a road race around the northern Italian town of Collecchio . In 1951, the Italian Cycling Federation sent him to the World Amateur Road Championships , which took place in Varese , Italy . There Ghidini won the world title in front of a home crowd. In 1952 he was part of the Italian squad for the Olympic cycling competitions in Helsinki. There he reached the silver medal in road team driving with the Italian team and was seventh in the individual road race.

1953 changed Ghidini into the professional camp , where he started for the Italian team Atala and Lygie. This year he achieved his best result with third place in the Apennine Tour . In total, he was able to place in five races in 1953. In 1954 and 1955 Ghidini drove for the Belgian-Italian racing team Girardengo-Eldorado, but could not achieve any countable successes except for a stage win at the Giro di Sicilia . In 1956 his career as a professional driver ended because he no longer received a professional contract.

In Fognano , a district of Parma, a cycle path was named after Gianni Ghidini.
