The Federal Republic of Germany took part in the 1952 Summer Olympics in the Finnish capital Helsinki with 205 athletes, 32 women and 173 men.

delegation

After no German Olympic team was allowed to take part in the first Olympic Games after the Second World War , in London in 1948 , German athletes were back in Helsinki in 1952. The youngest participant was the rower Helmut Noll at the age of 18, the oldest participant at 58 years the sailor Hans Lubinus .

In the run-up to the Games, the IOC recognized the National Olympic Committee of Germany, which represented the athletes in the Federal Republic of Germany . The National Olympic Committee of the German Democratic Republic was not recognized by the IOC. The proposal of a joint team made up of FRG and GDR athletes, supported by the IOC, was rejected by officials and politicians in the GDR . Thus only athletes from the West German Federal Republic represented the whole of Germany, but without the Saarland , which was at the start with an independent Olympic team. Further details can be found in Germany's Olympic history .

Flag bearer

The decathlete Friedel Schirmer carried the flag of Germany during the opening ceremony in the Olympic Stadium .

Medals

The athletes of the German teams won 7 silver and 17 bronze medals and thus finished 28th in the medal table .

No country has won (or suffered) 24 Olympic medal wins without a single Olympic victory before or after - Brazil's twelve medals (six silver and six bronze medals each) at the 2000 Games in Sydney followed by Canada with five silver and six Bronze medals at the 1976 Montreal Games .
