Wilfried Soltau

Wilfried Soltau (born June 17, 1912 in Hamburg , † September 27, 1995 in Sasel ) was a German canoeist . He participated in the Olympic Games in 1952 and 1956 and won two bronze medals.

Career

Soltau won his first German championship title in 1937 when he was successful with Heinz Osenbrüg in the two-man canoe over 1000 meters. The following year, the two won the bronze medal at the World Championships in Vaxholm.

After the Second World War, Wilfried Soltau was one of the strongest Canadian riders. By 1956 he won another 13 German championship titles in the two-man canoe over 1000 and 10,000 meters and was four times German team champion with the team of the Hamburg Canoe Club . From 1952 he competed with Egon Drews, who was 14 years his junior . At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , Drews and Soltau won the bronze medal in both the 1000-meter and the 10,000-meter distance. In 1954 the two received the bronze medal over 1000 meters at the world championships. At the age of 44, Soltau also competed again at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 and took fourth place over 10,000 meters with Drews.

On July 27, 1952, the Federal President awarded him the Silver Laurel Leaf .
