Urban Cleve

Urban Cleve (born November 24, 1930 in Dortmund ) is a German engineer, retired plant construction manager and former athlete.

Life

Born in Dortmund, Urban Cleve spent his childhood and early youth in Saarland from 1935 to 1949 . In Neunkirchen (Saar) he attended high school. He then lived in Moers , where he graduated from high school Adolfinum in 1952 . Since the winter semester 1952/53 he has been studying mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University specializing in power and heat engineering . In the summer semester of 1953 he became a member of the Corps Montania Aachen. In 1956 he completed his studies with a degree in engineering. He then studied economics and business administration at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . He found his first job as a plant engineer in a power plant. After working as a project and sales engineer, he was appointed head of the main technology department at BBC / Krupp Reaktorbau GmbH in 1964, where he was responsible for construction, site management, tests, electrical engineering and commissioning of the AVR (Jülich) and was responsible for creating the planning documentation for the THTR-300 nuclear power plant was involved until it was ready for construction. During this time Cleve worked very closely with Professor Dr. Rudolf Schulten , the developer of the high-temperature pebble type reactor, worked together. As a result, he became a board member of Wehrle-Werke, and in 1977 he became a board member of CEAG Dominit AG. In 1993 he was awarded a Dr.-Ing. From the Faculty of Mining and Metallurgy at RWTH Aachen University. PhD.

In the course of the discussion about the safety of pebble bed reactors triggered by the whistleblower Rainer Moormann in 2008 , Cleve vehemently opposed Moormann's safety concerns and denied his revelations about hidden incidents in German pebble bed HTR. Therefore, in 2008 he was the last survivor of the senior management of the BBC / Krupp Reaktorbau GmbH, which was dissolved in 1971, to be commissioned by the Kerntechnische Gesellschaft to document his knowledge and experience in connection with the AVR. The research ministries of the federal and state governments of North Rhine-Westphalia recommended something similar. Cleve has appeared frequently as a speaker at events organized by the controversial LaRouche movement since 2008 to promote pebble bed reactors. A report by four independent experts published in 2014 and commissioned by Forschungszentrum Jülich came - contrary to what Cleve stated - to the conclusion that serious irregularities and cover-ups of incidents had occurred during the construction and operation of the AVR Jülich pebble bed reactor (see here ). Cleve described this report as dishonorable and unsuccessfully asked Forschungszentrum Jülich to withdraw it. Cleve is publicly committed to climate protection .

In 1992 Cleve was the designated successor to Johann Peter Blank in the office of chairman of the Weinheimer Verband Alter Corpsstudenten , but did not take up this position because of a severe blow in his family.

athletics

Urban Cleve practiced athletics as a high-performance athlete . Starting for Preussen Krefeld , he became German champion in the 800-meter run in 1951 . In 1955 he was with the relay of the CSV Marathon 1910 Krefeld German champion in the 4 x 400 meter relay. He was a participant in 11 international athletics competitions. At the Olympic Games in 1952 , he qualified in the 800-meter run with second place in preliminary 7 for the semi-finals. There he took fifth place in run 1. He was also a three-time student world champion and German university champion.
