In 1952 Helmut Heinhold and Heinz Manchen from the Vegesack rowing club formed a new pair with a helmsman , the 18-year-old Helmut Noll was the helmsman in the boat. This boat won the German championship title straight away in front of the Duisburg defending champions Müller, Brinkmann and Funke. The three Bremen guys qualified for the 1952 Olympic rowing regatta in Meilahti , a district of Helsinki. There two German boats reached the final. The eighth finished fifth, while the two was only defeated by the French Raymond Salles , Gaston Mercier and Bernard Malivoire and thus won silver.
While Heinhold and Manchen still had success in the following years, the career of Helmut Noll ended after the Olympic Games in 1952. The youngest German Olympic participant from Helsinki was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf in 1952 .
