Heinz Schattner

Heinz Schattner (born June 20, 1912 in Danzig ; † February 2, 1954 in Munich ) was a German weightlifter .

Career

In his youth, the son of a master carpenter liked to play football and only turned to weightlifting at the age of 16 . Moved to Berlin in the meantime , he made rapid progress. From 1934 he was in the top German heavyweight division, but he had an indomitable opponent in Olympic champion Josef Manger . In 1936 he moved to Munich and joined the TSV 1860. He was a soldier from 1939 to 1945 and was seriously wounded in 1943. From 1945 to 1949 he formed an artist troupe with his wife and son and performed in variety theaters. It was only when he settled down again as a businessman in Munich in 1950 that he was able to spend another four successful years as a weight lifter. He died suddenly after an operation, only 42 years old.

At the European Championships in Stockholm in 1953, he won 1st place in the heavyweight division. For this he was awarded the silver bay leaf on December 6, 1953.
