Paul Wahl (born October 6, 1906 in Möhringen , † February 13, 1982 in Stuttgart ) was a German weightlifter . He was German heavyweight champion in 1934 and participant in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin

Career

Paul Wahl grew up in Möhringen near Stuttgart . He started there as a teenager at the SpVgg 1887 Möhringen with weightlifting. He first appeared in 1929 when he started in the German heavyweight championship in Villingen, where he finished 4th in the pentathlon with 482.5 kg (77.5-85-85-100-135).

In 1930 he moved to Düsseldorf for professional reasons and worked for KSV Düsseldorf 20 for three years . In 1931 he took 3rd place in the German heavyweight championship with 330 kg (90-107.5-132.5). In 1933 he returned to Möhringen and started for ASV Möhringen . In the following years, until 1949, he took 2nd or 3rd place in the German championships several times. The year 1934 was an exception, because in that year he was in Nuremberg in the heavyweight pentathlon with 545 kg (85-102.5-105-110-142.5) German champion in front of the former Olympic champion Josef Straßberger , Munich, who on 540 kg came.

The international career of Paul Wahl began in 1933. He came that year at the European Championships in the heavyweight division in a pentathlon on 507.5 kg (82.5-77.5-100-112.5-135) and thus finished 4th Place. In the years that followed, Paul Wahl showed performances in many national competitions on a par with those of Josef Straßberger and, from 1935, Josef Manger , the Olympic champion in 1936 and two-time world champion in 1937 and 1938. But he did not manage to repeat these achievements even remotely at the important competitions, namely the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, the 1935 European Championships in Paris and the 1938 World Championships in Vienna. For this reason he never won a medal at the international championships. At the European Championships in Paris in 1935, he achieved the same performance as the second and third winners in the Olympic three-way fight with 382.5 kg, but was the heaviest of these three lifters and therefore only came 4th in Paris.

In December 1934, in Tuttlingen and Stuttgart, he set two world records in two-armed tearing with 128 kg and 130 kg, respectively. In the Olympic duel in Tuttlingen he achieved 393 kg (115-128-150).
