Theo Aaldering (born May 10, 1920 in Wattenscheid , † March 22, 1979 in Essen ) was a German weightlifter.

life and career

Aaldering grew up in Wattenscheid and, since he was extremely strong as a teenager, started lifting weights . In 1938 he became German junior heavyweight champion. He soon made a name for himself among the active players too. In 1941 he already achieved 387.5 kg in the Olympic three-way fight. Then his career was interrupted by the war and the post-war period. In 1949, Theo Aaldering went to Fellbach for several years in order to be able to support his family.

In 1952 he returned to Essen and set Josef Manger's German record in the Olympic three-way battle with 437.5 kg. That year, shortly before the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki in Essen, he fought against multiple American Olympic and world champion John Davis. The fight ended in a draw 432.5: 432.5 kg. 1952 also saw the greatest disappointment in Aaldering's life. Shortly before the tickets to Helsinki were issued, it was found that Aaldering, the son of a Dutchman and a German, only had Dutch , but not German citizenship. So Helsinki went on without him.

Naturalized in the meantime, he won the silver medal at the European heavyweight championships in 1953 in Stockholm and 1955 in Munich. Theo Aaldering's best "combat weight" was around 160 kg. Two-armed pressing was his specialty.

For his sporting successes he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on November 13, 1955 .
