Arnold Luhaäär (born October 20, 1905 in Mõisaküla , Livonia Governorate , Russian Empire , † January 19, 1965 in Tallinn , Soviet Union ) was an Estonian weightlifter , shot putter , wrestler and athlete . He was an Olympic medalist in 1928 and 1936 .

Athletic performance

Arnold Luhaäär was one of the most famous Estonian athletes before World War II . He started lifting weights in Mõisaküla in Viljandi County before training in Pärnu and from 1926 in Tallinn. The peak of his career was from 1927 to 1939. He took part in numerous national and international competitions, including twice in the Summer Olympics, in two world championships and three European championships, and at the 1928 Spartakiad in Moscow , where he won the gold medal.

Arnold Luhaäär won the silver medal in the heavyweight division (from 82.5 kg) at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam . At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin , he won the bronze medal in the heavyweight division. Both Olympic medals are now on display in the museum of his hometown Mõisaküla.

In addition, Luhaäär won the silver medal at the European weightlifting championships in 1933 in Essen and the bronze medal at the 1938 world championships in Vienna . He set two world and seven Olympic records in his career. Eight times between 1926 and 1938 he was Estonian weightlifting champion and 1931 Estonian wrestling champion (Greco-Roman style). He has set 40 national Estonian records.

In addition to his sporting career, Luhaäär was employed as a railway telegraph operator and was involved in the Estonian Workers' Sports Association ( Estonian Eesti Töölisspordi Liit ).
