Leni Hofknecht was German runner-up in the long jump in 1950 and 1952 . With her best jump of 5.59 m in 1948, she would have won the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in London , but German athletes were not allowed to take part because of the Second World War . At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , she was finally able to take part in the long jump and took 15th place.
Shortly after the Olympics, she married the American Frederick Mader, whom she had previously met during her time as an exchange student at Winona State Teacher's College in Minnesota . The couple moved to West Grove , Pennsylvania , after the wedding .
