Franz Johannsen (born May 4, 1921 ; † 2006 ) was a German canoeist . He took part in the Olympic Games in 1952 and 1956 and finished fifth twice.

Career

In the single canoe , Johannsen was the strongest canoeist in the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1950s, with sixteen championship titles in ten years. At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , Johannsen only competed on the 10,000-meter course and finished seventh here. In 1956 in Melbourne , starting for the all-German team , he finished fifth both over 1000 meters and over 10,000 meters. The Romanian Leon Rotman won on both routes ahead of canoeists from Hungary, the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia. In 1953 and 1955 Johannsen had already won the title of Western European Champion on both routes.

Johannsen won his first German championship title in 1949 with the team of the Hamburg Canoe Club . By 1957, four more team titles were to be added, with Wilfried Soltau from 1949 to 1954 and Egon Drews in 1954 and 1957 also the dominant canoeists in the two-man Canadians part of the team.

On October 9, 1955, he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf for his athletic achievements.
