Gertrud Herrbruck

Gertrud Herrbruck , married Gertrud Bergoint (born July 27, 1926 in Pirmasens ; † June 7, 2021 there ) was a German swimmer . She took part in the 1952 Olympic Games .

Life and athletic career

Gertrud Herrbruck started as a swimmer for the 1st SV Blau-Weiß Pirmasens . It was discovered and promoted by the Pirmasens trainer Karl Schubert , himself an Olympic participant in 1928, and won eight German championships:

  • 100 m back: 1947, 1949, 1950 and 1951
  • 200 m back: 1952
  • 100 m freestyle: 1950
  • 400 m freestyle: 1949 and 1950

For her athletic achievements, she was honored with the silver laurel leaf on August 13, 1950 .

Herrbruck started at the European Championships in 1950 in Vienna over 100 m back, where she took the silver medal with 1: 17.8 minutes behind the Dutchwoman Hendrika van der Horst (gold in 1: 15.9 minutes) and ahead of the Dutchwoman Greet Galliard (bronze in 1: 17.9 min.). At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 she came in sixth place in the same discipline with a time of 1: 18.0 minutes.

After the Olympic Games in Helsinki, she ended her sports career at the age of 26 to take care of her sick mother. Herrbruck was widowed and had the family name Bergoint. She lived in Pirmasens, where she and her husband ran a photo shop for many years and died on June 7, 2021 at the age of 94. Their marriage resulted in a daughter.

Their medals and certificates have been on view in the Palatinate Sports Museum in Hauenstein since 2011 .
