Günter Heßelmann

Günter Heßelmann (born August 3, 1925 in Dinslaken ; † September 12, 2010 there ) was a German long-distance and obstacle runner .

As a representative of SuS 09 Dinslaken , Heßelmann took part in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki , Finland , together with his teammates Maria Sander and Rolf Lamers . With a hand-stopped time of 9: 05.0 minutes (electronically stopped: 9: 04.93 min), the German qualified behind the Soviet Vladimir Kazantsev for the final in the 3000 meter obstacle course. There the 171 cm tall and 62 kg heavy athlete reached the finish line in sixth place after 8: 55.8 minutes (electronically stopped: 8: 55.98 min).

In 1952, Heßelmann won the silver medal for Dinslaken at the German Athletics Championships , and in 1953 and 1955 also the bronze medal for VfB Lohberg . He also won the bronze medal in the 5000 meter run in 1950 and the silver medal in the 10,000 meter run the following year .

After his career, Heßelmann worked as a caretaker at the commercial vocational schools in Dinslaken. As a senior, he also achieved successes up to world championships on various long distances . In 1981 he achieved four gold medals at the Senior World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand - over 1500, 5000 and 10,000 meters as well as in cross country .

After a long illness, Heßelmann died at the age of 85 and was buried five days after his death in the Dinslaken Park Cemetery.
