Edgar Lothar Gorgas (born April 23, 1928 - May 15, 2019 ) was a German boxer . He was vice European champion of amateurs in 1951 in the heavyweight division.

Career

Edgar Gorgas was a member of the boxing club (BC) 1930 Essen -steele and a butcher's journeyman. At the end of the 1940s and the beginning of the 1950s he fought his way into the top German heavyweights in West Germany. With a height of 1.83 m and a weight of almost 90 kg, he was an agile but powerful heavyweight.

After Hugo Salfeld from Recklinghausen , the German heavyweight champion from 1948 to 1950, joined the professional boxers at the end of 1950, Edgar Gorgas won the qualifying tournament for the 1951 European Championship in the Northern Group at the beginning of 1951. On March 25, 1951, he then defeated the winner of the southern group Hermann Schreibauer from Munich in Alsfeld and was thus the representative of the DABV at the European championship in Milan , the first international championship after the Second World War in which German boxers were again allowed to participate.

In Milan, Edgar Gorgas won the quarter-finals over the French Abad on points and defeated the Belgian Peyer by knocking out the second round in the semifinals. In the final at the Palazzo dello Sporto in Milan, he faced the Italian Giacomo di Segni and 20,000 fanatical Italians, all of whom cheered on their compatriot. Impressed by this backdrop, Edgar Gorgas could not use his physical advantages against di Segni and lost on points. Winning the Vice European Championship was still a great success for him.

At the German championship in 1951 Edgar Gorgas could not compete due to injury. But he was back in the 1952 German championship. In the semifinals he defeated Günter Kiesner from Bremerhaven on points, but surprisingly lost to the young Horst Witterstein from Kempten (Allgäu) on points in the final . At the Olympic elimination for the Olympic Games in Helsinki , which took place in Berlin in June 1952 , at which the final opponents of the German championship boxed against each other again, Edgar Gorgas then prevailed against Horst Witterstein with a point victory and thus had the right to start at the Olympic Games fought for.

In Helsinki, Edgar Gorgas was eliminated in the preliminary round due to a point defeat against the South African Andries Nieman .

Edgar Gorgas played the following international matches:

  • 23 September 1951 in Essen , Germany against Ireland , point defeat against O'Colmain,
  • October 26, 1951 in Tehran , Iran against FRG, KOS victory 2nd round over Zedengani,
  • October 28, 1951 in Tehran, Iran against FRG, points victory over Khanian,
  • 0May 1, 1953 in Essen, Germany against Spain , first round knockout victory over Romeu

Edgar Gorgas fought for his club in team fights from mid-1953, but no longer took part in individual championships. Later he was available to his club as a coach.
