Edgar Basel (born November 1, 1930 in Mannheim ; † September 7, 1977 ) was a German flyweight boxer.

amateur

Basel was five-time German flyweight champion (1951, 1952, 1954-1956). At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 he won the silver medal in this weight class, where he was defeated in the final by the American Nathan Brooks . In 1955 he won the European Championships in Berlin . Basel was also nominated for the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne , but failed there in the first fight against the representative of the Soviet Union, Vladimir Stolnikov .

On August 2, 1952, he received the silver bay leaf.

professional

In 1957 he became a professional. As a technician, his fights were often decided on points. In May 1958 he fought for the vacant title of German bantamweight champion against Alfred Schweer from Bochum . In the fight for the featherweight title he failed in 1961 to Willy Quatuor from Dortmund by technical knockout. Almost exactly a year later, Basel again challenged Quatour. And this time he was defeated by a technical knockout. His last fight on November 24, 1961 should bring him the renewed title of German bantamweight champion, but his opponent Klaus Jager ( Frankfurt am Main ) won by technical knockout in the seventh round. He then ended his career in the professional rings after only four years.
