József Gál

József Gál (born April 20, 1918 in Cegléd , † February 2, 2003 Cegléd) was a Hungarian wrestler . He was world champion in 1950 in the Greco-Roman style in the lightweight.

Career

József Gál started wrestling at the wrestling club Ceglédi MOVE SE in 1934. He developed into an excellent wrestler in Greco-Roman. Style that became Hungarian lightweight champion for the first time in 1941. Due to the Second World War, he could not participate in any international championships for many years. From 1948 József Gál started for the association Ceglédi Vasutas SE. Although József Gál had also become Hungarian champion in 1948, he was not used at the 1948 Olympic Games in London .

In 1950 he was still considered by the Hungarian Wrestling Federation, now 32 years old, and nominated for the World Championship in Stockholm . In Stockholm he proved that he belongs to the absolute world elite, as he became world champion with six wins in a superior style . He defeated Tevfik Yüce from Turkey and the Swedish Olympic champion from 1948 Gustav Freij in the finals .

In 1951 there were no world championships in Greco-Roman. Style instead. There were also no European championships, so the international starting opportunities for wrestlers were very limited at the time. In 1952 József Gál tried to qualify for the Olympic Games in Helsinki , but he failed in Hungary to Gyula Tarr , which he did not get past in the following years. He then ended his career as an active wrestler in 1954 and became a coach at the Hungarian Wrestling Association and at his club Ceglédi Vasutas SE.
