Aleksy Antkiewicz (born November 12, 1923 in Katlewo near Nowe Miasto Lubawskie , † April 3, 2005 in Danzig ) was a Polish boxer . He was the winner of a silver medal at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki and a bronze medal at the 1948 Olympic Games in London in featherweight or lightweight.

Career

Antkiewicz came to Gdynia ( Gdynia ) with his parents when he was three years old . There he started boxing at the Belekitni Gdynia sports club in 1938 and moved to WKS Flota Gdynia a year later . His trainer there was Matuszewski and one of his training partners Zygmunt Chychla .

Shortly afterwards, his athletic career came to an end for the time being, because after the attack by the German Wehrmacht on Poland he was abducted to the so-called Reich territory and forced to work in a construction train. In 1945 he was liberated by the VII US Army in Burghausen and returned to Gdynia. He immediately started boxing again and was the first Polish featherweight champion in 1947. He won other Polish championship titles in 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951 and 1954 in featherweight and lightweight. The boxing clubs he boxed for in his second career were Grom Gdynia , Korwica Gdynia , MKS Gdynia and others. Gwardia Gdańsk ( Danzig ).

Antkiewicz took part in the European Amateur Boxer Championships in 1947 in Dublin , 1949 in Oslo and 1951 in Milan . He did not win any medals at these three events. Due to poor sources, nothing is known about his exact performance at these championships.

In 1948 Antkiewicz started at the 1948 Olympic Games in London in the featherweight division. He won there over Leon Trani from the Philippines , Kevin Martin from Ireland and Bung Nan-Su from South Korea and lost in the semifinals to the Italian Ernesto Formenti on points. In the battle for the bronze medal , which was last boxed out at the time, he won over Francisco Nunez from Argentina .

In 1952 he took part in the Olympic Games in Helsinki for the second time. He was there in the lightweight and won over Benjamin Enriquez from the Philippines, Hans-Werner Wohlers from Germany a . Frederick Reardon from Great Britain each on points and came in the semifinals to a non-fighting victory over Gheorghe Fiat from Romania . In the final he was defeated by the Italian Aureliano Bolognesi with 2: 1 judges votes and won the silver medal .

He also won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Warsaw in 1953 . He won there over Gheorghe Fiat and the Englishman Hinson on points and lost in the semifinals to Vladimir Jengibarjan from the Soviet Union on points.

In 1955 he ended his boxer career after 250 fights. He won 215 fights, fought eight draws and lost 27 fights.

Antkiewicz was an officer in the Polish militia. He also trained as a boxing trainer and was a trainer at the Wybrzcezu Gdańsk u. Czarnych Slupsk . His outstanding students were Henryk Dampc , Hubert Skrypczak u. Kazimierz Adach .
