Pentti Niinivuori

Pentti Niinivuori (born August 27, 1931 in Forssa , † July 5, 1988 there ) was a Finnish boxer . He won a bronze medal in the lightweight at the European Amateur Championship in Warsaw in 1953 .

Career

Pentti Niinivuori was a member of the Forssan Alkan sports club and started boxing as a teenager. In 1950 he started as a flyweight for the first time in a Finnish senior championship and lost the final against the eventual Olympic champion Pentti Hämäläinen on points. He was Finnish champion in 1953, 1954 and 1955 in the lightweight and 1959 in the welterweight .

In 1952 he was allowed to compete as a featherweight at the Olympic Games in Helsinki , although he had only finished 3rd in the Finnish championship of that year. In Helsinki he lost his first fight against Sergio Caprari from Italy and retired early.

At the European Championships in Warsaw in 1953 , he was more successful. He fought his way there in the lightweight up to the semi-finals, in which he was defeated on points against Istvan Juhasz from Hungary. But he won a bronze medal by reaching the semi-finals . In 1953, Pentti Niinivuori started for Europe in two comparative matches against the United States in Chicago and St. Louis , defeating the Americans Joe Catalano and Frank Borders on points in the lightweight. In the same year he won the international match against Poland in Helsinki over the Polish silver medalist at the 1952 Olympic Games in lightweight Aleksy Antkiewicz on points.

He also competed in the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne . He lost there but in featherweight against Zygmunt Milewski from Poland and retired without having won a medal. His last start at international championships he completed at the European Championships in 1957 in Prague , where he competed in the light welterweight division . He won there over Alexander Miltsew from Bulgaria , but retired in the round of 16 through a point defeat against Dave Stone from England .

In 1960 Pentti Niinivuori ended his boxer career. He did not qualify for the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome . He completed a total of 230 fights in his career as an amateur, of which he won 194 fights. He never became a professional boxer.
