Henryk Dampc (born April 12, 1935 in Wejherowo , † March 24, 2000 in Gdańsk ) was a Polish boxer . He was vice European champion in 1959 in Lucerne in the light middleweight division.

Career

Henryk Dampc started boxing at Gryfia Wejherowo . His first coach was Kazimierz Switka. As early as 1953 he moved to the Wybrzeże Gdańsk sports club , where he was trained by Brunon Karnath and to which he belonged until the end of his career in 1970. At a height of 1.81 meters, he boxed mostly middleweight (up to 75 kg body weight), but trained in the light middleweight (up to 71 kg body weight) at important championships. This was mainly due to the fact that he had two very strong competitors in the middleweight division in Tadeusz Walasek and Lucjan Slovakiewicz in Poland . Henryk Dampc had two boxing brothers, Edmund also counted among the Polish top class.

1958 Henryk Dampc was the first Polish light middleweight champion and in 1959 he was Polish middleweight runner-up behind Tadeusz Walasek. In 1959 he was used at the European Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland. He started it in the light middleweight division and won over Iwan Sobolew from the USSR , Ulrich Kienast from the Federal Republic of Germany and Rolf Caroli from the GDR on points. In the final battle he faced Nino Benvenuti from Italy . This fight ended with a narrow victory on points (3-2 judges' votes) in favor of Benvenuti. Many boxing experts who attended this fight saw it as a misjudgment and Dampc as the winner.

In 1960 Henryk Dampc competed in the Olympic Games in Rome. In the light middleweight division he won points over Leif Hansen from Denmark and Michael Reid from Ireland . In the quarter-finals, however, he surprisingly lost to the British William Fisher and only came in 4th place.

Henryk Dampc also competed in the 1959, 1961 and 1962 police championships of the Warsaw Pact states. In 1959 and 1961 he won the competition in the light middle and middle weight. In 1962 he had to admit defeat to Romanian Ion Monea in the middleweight division.

In 1962 he was behind Tadeusz Walasek Polish runner-up in the middleweight division and in 1964 he lost at the Polish championships against the same boxer in the semi-finals and came in 3rd place.

After 1963, Henryk Dampc ended his international career. For his club Wybrzeże Gdańsk he was at the start until 1970. He contested a total of 354 fights in his career and landed 272 wins.

After his boxing career, during which he was employed by the police, Henryk Dampc went to sea.
