Tadeusz Walasek (born July 15, 1936 in Elzbiecin near Łomża ; † November 6, 2011 ) was a Polish boxer . He won a silver medal at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome and was European champion of amateurs in 1961 in the middleweight division .

Career

Tadeusz Walasek came to Wroclaw in the course of the turmoil of the war, his father was a member of the Polish II Corps of General Anders' army . In 1949 he started boxing at the Nysie Kłodzko Sports Club . He made rapid progress and was one of the best young boxers in Poland even at the junior level. In the course of his long career he also belonged to the clubs Stali Częstochowa , Górnik Zabrze , Sparta Ziębice and Gwardia Warsaw .

1955 Tadeusz Walasek Polish junior middleweight champion. This year he also made his first international start as part of a junior international match between Poland and Romania . He lost it against Gheorghe Negrea on points. In the same year he was also the winner of the 5th World Youth Festival in Warsaw in the welterweight division with a point victory over the experienced Romanian Nicolae Linca , who had won a medal at the European Senior Championships in 1953 and 1955.

In 1956 he qualified for the start at the Olympic Games in Melbourne without having previously been a Polish champion. But he had to pay tribute to his relative inexperience in Melbourne, because he lost in the first round against the Irish champions Frederick Tiedt .

At the European Championships in 1957 in Prague Tadeusz Walasek started in the light middleweight division. There he showed his great ability and defeated Ulrich Kienast from the Federal Republic of Germany , Johnny Cunningham from England and Ivan Sobolew from the USSR on points. In the final, he faced the exceptional Italian boxer Nino Benvenuti , who later became Olympic champion and professional world champion in the middleweight division, and was only marginally defeated by 2: 3 judges' votes after an even battle.

In 1958 Tadeusz Walasek was the first Polish middleweight champion. This title win followed in the years 1959 to 1964 six more in the middleweight division. In 1959 he started again at the European Championship of Amateurs, which took place in Lucerne . He won there over Paul Nickel from Schwerin with 4: 1 judge votes and was then lucky that he was awarded 3: 2 point wins in his next two fights against Tommaso Truppi from Italy and Harry Scott from England . The luck he had in these two fights, however, he lacked in the final against the Soviet Olympic champion from 1956 Gennady Shatkow , because in this final the judges awarded Shatkow a narrow 3-2 point victory.

In general, Tadeusz Walasek had it with 3-2 results. Because even in the 1960 Olympic final in Rome , in which he fought his way, there was a 3: 2 judgment and again to the disadvantage of Tadeusz Walasek. The judges gave the American Edward Crook the victory with this result. Tadeus Walasek won the silver medal with it . Before the final battle, he had defeated Sultan Mahmoud from Iraq , Teifion Davies from Australia , Frederik van Royen from South Africa and Ewgeni Feofanow from the Soviet Union, each on points. It was surely a coincidence that he had opponents from all five continents in the five fights he fought in Rome.

In 1961, Tadeusz Walasek then won his first title at an international championship. He became European middleweight amateurs champion in Belgrade . He defeated Luigo Baseotto also Italy by knockout in the 3rd round, defeated Wasil Paparizow from Bulgaria and Dragoslav Jakovljević from Yugoslavia on points and won the final over Ewgeni Feofanow by techn. KO in the 3rd round.

Tadeusz Walasek was not at the start at the 1963 European Championships, but at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo he won a bronze medal in the middleweight division . After victories over John Bukowski from Australia, Joae Aguilar from Argentina and Ahmed Hassan from the United Arab Republic, however, he suffered a knockout defeat in the semifinals from Valery Popentschenko from the USSR.

This was his last start in an international championship. Tadeusz Walasek represented his country from 1955 to 1964 in many international battles that were very popular at the time. His most important victory was undoubtedly the point victory over Valeri Popentschenko in 1963 in Łódź . Surprisingly, he had difficulties with boxers from Germany several times. In 1959 he lost to Ernst Haschka in Essen and in 1962 in Munich and 1963 in Breslau to Emil Schulz on points.

Tadeusz Walasek played a total of 421 fights, of which he won 378, nine times he fought a draw and 34 fights he lost. After the end of his playing days, he was a coach at various clubs for 20 years. His most successful student was Jerzy Rybicki .
