Rolf Caroli (born December 23, 1933 in Halle (Saale) ; † 2007 ) was a German boxer . He won the bronze medal in the light middleweight division at the European Amateur Boxer Championships in 1955, 1957 and 1959 .

Career

Rolf Caroli grew up in Halle and started boxing there with his brother Georg at the ZSG KWU “Fichte” Halle in the late 1940s. At that time, amateur boxing, but not professional boxing, was forbidden in what was then the Soviet occupation zone . In 1951 he moved to Wissenschaft Halle , which was meanwhile also allowed for amateur boxing . There he made very rapid progress and developed into an excellent stylist.

In 1955 he was the first time GDR light middleweight champion with a victory in the final battle over Nagel from SC Traktor Schwerin , after he had beaten Detlef Büchsenschuß from SC Einheit Berlin in the semifinals . His brother Georg Caroli had already become East German welterweight champion in 1954 and fled to the Federal Republic of Germany at the beginning of 1955 .

Rolf Caroli started at the 1955 European Championship in West Berlin . He won there in the light middleweight division against Andresen, Denmark , and Burke, Ireland . In the semifinals he faced Jarerjan from the Soviet Union, to whom he lost on points. By reaching the semi-finals, he had already won the European Championship bronze medal . In an international match between the GDR and Hungary in Berlin, he faced the two-time Olympic champion László Papp . Rolf Caroli went smoothly with this exceptional boxer and only lost on points.

In 1956, Rolf Caroli was again GDR light middleweight champion with a victory over Johann Braun from Karl-Marx-Stadt (today Chemnitz ). In the subsequent all-German Olympic elimination , he lost in the first fight against Peter Kienast from Hamborn , who sent him twice to the ground, on points and thus missed the Olympic ticket for the Games in Melbourne .

In 1957, Rolf Caroli won the light middleweight title for the third time in a row at the GDR championship by breaking off in the third round over Detlef Büchsenschuß. He was also at the start again at the European Championships in Prague . There he won against Backman, Finland , on points and against Oostrum, Netherlands , by breaking off in the 3rd round. In the semifinals he was defeated by the Italian Nino Benvenuti by just a few points and won another European Championship bronze medal .

In 1958, Rolf Caroli only came third in the GDR light middleweight championship behind Detlef Büchsenschuß and Jens Thomsen from SC Aufbau Magdeburg . International championships did not take place this year. In an international match between the GDR and Poland in Rostock , he defeated Leszek Wasilowski on points.

He won the fourth GDR championship title in 1959. He defeated Johann Braun in the final battle, now starting for SC Karl-Marx-Stadt . At the European Championships in Lucerne , Rolf Caroli won in the light middleweight division together with Dragoslav Jakovljević from Yugoslavia behind Nino Benvenuti and Henryk Dampc from Poland again the European Championship bronze medal.

In 1960 Rolf Caroli won ahead of Rolf Irmisch from SC Dynamo Berlin , Hans-Dieter Neidel from SC Traktor Schwerin and Erich Posorski from SC Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt again at the GDR light middleweight championship. He then also qualified for the all-German Olympic team for the Games in Rome . There he was defeated in the first round against outsider Pedro Votta from Uruguay and was eliminated.

After 1960 Rolf Caroli ended his successful career. He became a junior coach at SC Chemie Halle for the next twenty years and then lived in Halle as a pensioner.
