Gheorghe Negrea

Gheorghe Negrea (born April 21, 1934 in Sibiu ; † 2001 ) was a Romanian boxer . Negrea was European Champion in 1957 and silver medalist at the 1959 and 1961 European Championships and the 1956 Olympic Games . He was also a participant in the 1960 and 1964 Olympic Games .

Career

In 1956 Negrea reached the light heavyweight final (-81 kg) at the Olympic Games after victories over Petrus van Vuuren, South Africa , Ottavio Panunzi, Italy , and Carlos Lucas , Chile , which he lost to James Boyd , USA , and thus the Olympic one Won silver medal. The following year he won the gold medal at the European Championships . Whereby he met Petar Stankov, Bulgaria , in the final . The same was his opponent in the final of the Eastern Bloc military championships and he was able to win here too. At the European Championships in 1959 Negrea reached the final again, but this time Zbigniew Pietrzykowski , Poland , had to admit defeat.

In 1960 Negrea won the Balkan Championships before his second participation in the Olympic Games . At the Olympic Games, however, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Anthony Madigan , Australia (KO 2nd). The following year he defended his title at the Eastern Bloc military championships and reached the final again at the European championships , which he lost to Giulio Saraudi , Italy .

In his third participation in the Olympic Games in 1964, Negrera retired in the first fight against the later silver medalist Alexei Kisseljow , Soviet Union (5-0), and then ended his career.
