biography

Günter Dohrow, born in the Berlin district of Neukölln , was considered a gold favorite at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki over 1500 m . During training, however, Werner Lueg ran after him with his spikes. Although Dohrow was able to reach the semi-finals, but was eliminated there. In the following year he was able to secure the gold medal over 800 m at the German Championships in Augsburg . At the European Championships in 1954 Dohrow finished eighth in the 1500 m race . As the new German champion over 1500 m , he traveled to the Olympic Games in Melbourne , where he started both over 800 and 1500 m. But this time too, the Berliner was not spared from injuries and did not get past the lead because of his Achilles tendon. In total, Dohrow took part in 25 international matches and numerous ISTAF events . Dohrow, who was trained by Bert Sumser , was nicknamed "The Flying Elementary School Teacher ", which can be traced back to his profession as a teacher . In addition to athletics, he played handball at TSV Rudow 1888 .
